Welcome to the Newry and District Anglers Association website.
We are a fishing club based in Newry, with members from all over Co. Down and Co. Armagh. We control the fishing on the Clanrye River, also referred to as the Newry River, and the club lake called McCourt's Lake near Poyntzpass.
We are open to new members, and have 3 levels of membership available:
Full Membership, giving access to both the river and the lake
River Only Membership, giving access to full length of the river
Junior or Student Membership, which is a discounted Full Membership
In addition, day tickets are available to cover all our waters at a cost of £12 per day. These are available from Newry Angling Centre, or from Trainor's Filling station in Poyntzpass.
Any angler wishing to fish any club water needs to have one of the following, in addition to their Day Ticket or Membership Card:
A current Loughs Agency Game Rod License
A current Loughs Agency Endorsement on a DAERA Game Rod License
Clanrye River (aka Newry River)
The Clanrye River is the main river flowing through Newry. Newry and District Angles Association controls the fishing along the entire length of the river. The riparian rights are leased from the owners, the Kilmorey Estate.
The river holds a decent stock of small to medium wild brown trout, with sea trout and an occasional salmon also being landed. The season as defined by the Loughs Agency is 1st March to 31st October. All legal methods can be used on the river.
McCourts Lake is a small, relatively shallow lake on the southern edge of Poyntzpass village. Newry and District Anglers Association control the fishing on this lake, and have a programme of regular stocking with rainbow trout.
McCourts Lake is Fly Fishing Only!
As the outflow from this lake makes it's way down into Newry Canal, and hence into the Clanrye River and Carlingford Lough, the statutory body which oversees fishing in the lake is the Loughs Agency, and a Loughs Agency Rod License is required. Loughs Agency bailiffs frequently visit the lake to check angler's rod licenses, and we'd strongly recommend carrying an electronic (or printed) copy with you at all times.
Environmental Information
Coming Soon!
We are working to be able to provide additional environmental data on the lake in almost real-time. Being aware of the environmental data such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen levels and weather conditions allows us to ensure we are aware of what is happening in and around the lake, and take steps to ensure the wellbeing of the fish in it. For example, we may need to limit fishing for the welfare of the fish in situations where the water temperature increases too much, or if the dissolved oxygen levels go too low, both conditions which stress the fish.
As an example, we will initially be providing the average air temperature over the last hour, the average water temperature at 1ft depth, and the average water temperature at 4ft depth.
